Make Nine – A Slow and Gentle Challenge for Makers

Sewing and knitting notions including scissors, yarn, a measuring tape, and thread.

Somehow 2025 is already here. I’ve been thinking about the projects I want to tackle this year. What pieces does my wardrobe need? How can I make with the intention of filling the gaps and creating garments I will love for years to come? I did some research into the make nine challenge and hope to inspire you, too.

What is the “make-nine” challenge?

The Make Nine Challenge started in 2015 when Ro of Home Row Handcraft compiled a list of her 2014 makes. She was inspired by the “Best Nine” hashtag that was going around Instagram at the time.

She decided to post her plans for the new year with great intention and slow fashion in mind.

The premise of her idea was that she was going to create 9 pieces based on the following principles –

  1. What is my wardrobe lacking?
  2. What can I use that I already have to make something? What will my budget allow me to make?
  3. What do I have in my closet that I wear all the time that I can recreate?
  4. How do these makes fit into my schedule? What will I have time for?
  5. What can I make based on the seasons?
  6. What do I really love making?
  7. What new-to-me techniques do I really want to try or learn?
  8. How can I expand on what I learned last year?
  9. What is really important to me? How can I align my values with what I want to make this coming year?

What are some possible make nine themes?

  • 9 “new-to-me” sewing or knitting techniques
  • a seasonal make nine
  • nine pieces my wardrobe needs
  • nine thrift flips
  • a make nine capsule wardrobe
  • a sewing make nine
  • a knitting make nine
  • nine accessories
  • nine wardrobe staples

The possibilities are endless!

As the new year begins and my excitement for a fresh beginning grows, I started to think more about how I can curate my wardrobe a little more based on what my closet needs, what I am excited to make, and what I want to try. This challenge is meant to be a “gentle one” where there is no deadline or no hard and fast rules. It’s simply a fun way to make with intention.

I hope learning a little more about the Make Nine Challenge inspires you to create with more intention in 2025. I can’t wait to see what you make.

Here’s to a year filled with the magic of creating our own wardrobes with fibers and patterns that excite us and a community that inspires us. ✨
