Meet the Designer: Maiden Mary
Before we dive into this week’s pattern, I wanted to highlight the designer behind it.
Mary, the designer behind Maiden Mary Designs, has been sewing her whole life, but returned to it several years ago after a hiatus. She was asked to create custom clothing for friends and family, and then began designing her own sewing patterns, and the rest is history.
Her thoughtful pattern designs accentuate innate femininity. Many of her designs include fitted bodices, waist ties, and ruffles. They’re classic, timeless, and romantic, which makes them the perfect addition to anyone’s handmade clothing pattern collection. Mary’s designs are size-inclusive, so they’re suitable for every season in life.
Mary loves to encourage others to sew, too. If you’re local to the Tacoma, Washington area, Mary hosts a monthly sewing get-together! You can find more details here.

What You’ll Learn From This Classic Dress Pattern
As this pattern is recommended for confident beginners, it is best to know basic sewing skills. My biggest advice for beginners is always “there’s no better way to learn than to do”, so if elements of this dress are new to you, cut out that fabric and sit at your machine anyway! 😁
While making this, you’ll practice:
- buttons and button holes
- gathering fabric to make a ruffle
- inserting waist ties
While these skills might seem intimidating, you’ll be able to look back on this dress and be proud of the skills you learned and improved. There’s no better feeling than sewing your own wardrobe.

How I’d Make This
If I were making this pattern, I would:
- Choose a lightweight linen that I can layer all year long
- Use a cover button kit to make buttons that match the fabric for an elevated look
- I would make classic tee sleeves for a low-key, everyday look.
I love that this dress is suitable for so many seasons of life. Since I prefer modest coverage over my bust, I would wear my Haven Dress over one of my Sommar Camisoles and pair it with my handmade Babylon Leather Saddle Bag.
