Introduction
For a long time, sewing with leather felt just out of reach for me. As someone who sews primarily with natural fiber fabrics like linen and cotton and knits with wool, leather always seemed like a completely different skill set. The barrier to entry felt steep. High-quality leather and tools seemed inaccessible. And I didn’t have time to source materials or learn a new hobby.
At the same time, I’ve always been drawn to leather goods. One of the first big purchases for myself was a leather bag from Madewell. I don’t use it now, but it traveled with me throughout my time in Germany and aged beautifully. I also have a handcrafted leather wallet from Gusti Leather that I purchased when living in Berlin, and it’s become one of my favorite accessories. There’s something about the way leather ages over time and echoes the uniqueness of your life with wear as it patinas, that feels deeply aligned with a natural fiber wardrobe. Just like linen softens, and wool evolves with wear, leather tells a story, too.
I started to realize that leather wasn’t separate from my handmade wardrobe. It was the missing piece. It’s a way to add texture and depth to my wardrobe. Handmade leather pieces not only help tell the story of my life, but also share who I am as a maker.
When Babylon Leather reached out to collaborate and gifted me one of their leather bag kits, it felt like the perfect opportunity to explore leather in a way that felt approachable and aligned with my style.
In this post, I’m sharing my full experience making the bag. From first impressions to the sewing process, along with beginner tips, and my honest review of the kit.

What’s Included in the Babylon Leather Bag Kit
One of the first things I noticed when opening the kit was how well it was suited to beginners. The packaging is simple and minimal, making it clear that the focus is on the quality of the materials rather than on unnecessary extras. The kit is straightforward. All leather pieces are cut out, all the hardware is packaged together, and the tools you need to construct the bag are included.
Inside the kit, you’ll find:
- Pre-cut leather pieces with pre-punched stitching holes
- All the hardware you need (buckles, screws, etc.)
- Waxed thread
- Needles
- Clips
- Step-by-step instructions
Everything is prepared ahead of time, which removes a huge barrier if you’re new to leatherwork. I never had to think twice about making perfect cuts or punching holes into the leather pieces myself. I didn’t have to source the correct thread or hardware. Everything was included, so I could get started right away.

This beginner-friendly leather bag kit is one of the easiest ways to learn leather sewing without needing any specialized tools or prior experience. You can add the perfect natural fiber accessory right into your wardrobe.
First Impressions of the Leather
Before even starting the project, I spent some time getting familiar with the material and the tools included in the kit. When I opened the box, I was impressed that it actually smelled of high-quality leather. I was wary that the leather might be cheap, but the feel it had was sturdy, so I knew it would make a great bag.
- Leather type: Vegetable-tanned leather
- Thickness: Structured but still workable by hand for beginners
- Finish & color: Smooth and slightly matte, but rich
- Overall feel: Heirloom quality and durable
What stood out most was how substantial the leather felt. I was worried it would be too thick to hand sew, especially for a beginner. The first few stitches were tough, but as I worked with the leather as I sewed, it grew softer and easier to work with.
Why a Leather Bag Kit Is Perfect for Beginners
If cutting into leather has ever felt intimidating, a kit like this completely changes the experience. Because everything is pre-cut and stitch holes are pre-punched, you’re able to focus entirely on construction and technique rather than worrying about making irreversible mistakes. All the necessary tools are included, so you never have to think twice about finishing the bag with ease.
This kit is especially great for:
- Confident beginners ready to try a new material
- Garment sewists curious about leatherwork
- Anyone wanting a low-risk introduction to leather crafting
- Gift givers who love the idea of gifting something their loved one can make themselves

Sewing the Bag: My Experience
Tools I Used
One of my favorite things about this kit was that everything was included.
- Sewing machine: Not required (this is fully hand-sewn)
- Thread: Waxed thread (included)
- Needles: Included in the kit
- Clips: Used instead of pins
I made a couple of mistakes in attaching some of the leather panels when constructing the bag. Instead of unthreading it all, I opted to cut the thread. I was worried that I wouldn’t have enough, but since Babylon Leather included two spools of thread, I had more than enough to finish the bag.
The kit even included thread snips, clips, and sturdy needles. All the tools were high-quality, so I’ll be keeping them and using them for future projects.
The Sewing Process
The construction process felt very different from garment sewing, but in a good way.
- Instructions: Each kit has a QR code to a short video
- I prefer to have written and illustrated instructions myself. Although the video was clear and well-produced, it hindered my experience. I really didn’t like the music used, and there was no talking, just captions that didn’t stay on the screen long.
- Learning curve: The first few stitches were finicky, and sewing with two needles was new to me, but I quickly got the hang of it, and it was quite relaxing
- Adjustments: I followed the pattern as shown in the video
- Time to complete: Approximately 4–6 hours
Overall, I really enjoyed the process of sewing this bag. But the way the instructions are delivered isn’t ideal for how I like to craft. I tend to print off instructions for my projects because I like that making helps me unplug and live in the moment. When I put the bag down for a couple of days during the construction process, I would have to scan the QR code again and scrub to find where I was. I found this to be distracting and often frustrating, but it wouldn’t stop me from purchasing another kit myself.
The Finished Bag and My Honest Thoughts
The entire process of making this leather bag was extremely satisfying. From opening the kit and seeing pieces of leather and spools of wax thread, to holding a finished bag and incorporating it into my me-made wardrobe, I couldn’t be more pleased.
- Structure: Sturdy and holds its shape beautifully
- Size: I can easily fit my phone, a small wallet, keys, and chapstick
- Feel: Durable and timeless
- Style: Classic and minimal, easy to pair with a natural fiber wardrobe
This is the kind of piece that only gets better with time, which makes it especially meaningful as an accessory in a handmade wardrobe.
While I was gifted this item in exchange for my honest review, I would absolutely purchase a kit myself. I’m really interested in the Card Case Wallet, this Women’s Tote Kit, and even the Men’s Wallet Kit to make as a gift. I am confident that I could make more high-quality leather accessories for myself and loved ones that will become instant heirlooms.

How This Beginner Leather Bag Kit Fits Into a Natural Fiber Wardrobe
If you focus on building a wardrobe rooted in natural fibers like linen, cotton, and wool, leather feels like a natural extension of that philosophy.
While it’s not a fabric, leather shares many of the same qualities that make natural fibers so appealing:
- Durability: Like linen and wool, leather is built to last for years
- Aging beautifully: Instead of wearing out, leather develops a rich patina over time
- Timeless aesthetic: It pairs effortlessly with soft, neutral, and organic textiles
- Slow fashion alignment: Fewer, better pieces that are made (or sewn) with intention
What I love most is how this bag integrates into my existing wardrobe. It complements the textures and style I already gravitate toward – soft linen dresses, layered natural fiber pieces, and classic, timeless design.
It also fills a gap in my wardrobe that I’ve been looking to fill. Since I gravitate toward classic and timeless staples, this Saddle Bag Kit in Light Brown has integrated into my wardrobe beautifully. I know that I’ll be using it styled with many outfits and in many seasons of life.
