How to Make No Sew Scandanavian Star Ornaments

These cute little No Sew Scandinavian Star ornaments may look impossible to make but they are so easy! All you need are 4 strips of fabric, an iron, some Wonder Clips, fabric scissors and hot glue! They take about 15 minutes to make and will be the perfect ornament to add to your collection or to gift for family and friends.

What materials do I need to make No Sew Scandinavian Star fabric ornaments?

• 4 pieces of fabric, each measuring 3″x12″
  • You can use any variation of colors you want! 2 of the same or 4 different colors!
• a rotary cutter or fabric scissors and pinking shears
• iron and ironing board
• Wonder Clips
• hot glue gun
• 8″ of thin ribbon or string
  • I use ⅛” inch ribbon

What kind of fabric can I use to make ornaments?

I like to use quilting cotton for these ornaments since it is easy to work with and creates crisp corners. You can also use thrifted materials like cotton clothing or give life to thrifted bedsheets or napkins! You can use linen, but it’s a little trickier to iron than cotton. I would advise against thinner fabrics like chiffon or silk, as these will be a bit too slippery and won’t create crisp points on the star.

How to Make Handmade Fabric Star Ornaments

1. Cut your fabric

Cut 4 strips of fabric measuring 3 inches wide by 12 inches long. Two in your light fabric and two in dark or 4 of the same if you prefer.

2. Iron fabric strips

Fold fabric in half, wrong sides together, aligning the raw edges. Press with your iron, creating a crisp, folded edge. Unfold and then press the edges into the center line to conceal raw edges. Fold in half and press again. Your final strip should measure ¾ of an inch wide. Repeat with the remaining strips.

3. Weave strips to form the center of the star

We are going to imagine that on top of our fabric, we have a clock. Arrange your fabric as shown below while following the instructions on how to weave together the center of the star.

Lay two strips vertically on a flat surface. Place the 3rd (C) strip over the top of the right strip (B) and under the left strip (A). Take the 4th strip (D) and lay it under the third strip (B). Take the left vertical strip (A) and place it over the top of the 3rd strip (C) and then under the 4th strip (D). Pull and arrange the strips to close any gaps in the center.

4. Continue weaving

1. Working clockwise, take the bottom right (D) strip and fold it over to the left towards 9 o’clock so that it covers strip A.
2. Take the bottom of strip A and fold it up to the top of the star towards 12 o’clock.
3. Take the left side of strip C and fold it over to 3 o’clock toward strip A and under strip B.
4. Repeat until all strips are tucked in.
5. Give your fabric a good tug so that it fits snugly

1. Take the top of strip B and fold it down toward 6 o’clock.
2. Tuck the top of strip B under strip D
3. Continue until all fabric is tucked in.
4. Flip the star over and repeat on the opposite side
5. The boxes in the center should be opposite each other on either side
6. Tug on all edges to make sure the center is secure

5. Make the star points

1. Starting with strip A fold over to 9 o’clock, crease with your finger, take the top of the strip and flip down to 6 o’clock. Fold fabric over to the right so that the long end is over the center of the star. Secure the point with a Wonder clip.
2. Take the excess fabric and tuck under strip D
3. Tug slightly on strip A and cut about 1 inch off.
   • TIP: you want to leave just enough fabric so that you can secure it in place under the tuck with hot glue
4. Pull on the Wonder clip slightly to pull the point back out.
5. Rotate the star 90 degrees and repeat
6. Repeat until all points have been made
7. Flip the star over and repeat to create a total of 8 star points

6. Remove Wonderclips and iron

Remove all Wonder Clips. Using the steam setting on your iron, gently press down on both sides of the star to set everything in place

7. Attach ribbon and glue to secure fabric

Allow the star to cool while your hot glue gun warms up.

Gently lift up each tuck of fabric and place a small amount of glue. Gently press down to secure the fabric in place

Fold the ends of the ribbon in on itself and secure with glue. Place the same end unto the top of the star and secure with glue. Hang on your tree or decorate presents for loved ones!
