Free Sewing Pattern Friday #13: Orchard Top & Dress – Helen’s Closet

This fourteenth edition of Free Pattern Friday features a free pattern for a top and dress perfect for hot summer days.

Helen’s Closet shares a pattern that is beginner-friendly, dartless, and perfect for your handmade capsule wardrobe, as it can be easily layered with a tee or cardigan in cooler months!

It’s ideal for lightweight woven fabrics such as linen, cotton, or thrifted textiles. Or choose a heavier fabric for a more drapey look.

Just a heads-up—some of the links in this blog post are affiliate links, which means I may earn a small commission (at no extra cost to you) if you make a purchase through them. These commissions help support my work so I can continue bringing you free sewing tutorials, tips, and inspiration.

Thank you for being part of this creative journey.

Why I love this pick

I haven’t made this pattern yet, but this would be the perfect wardrobe staple for any summer wardrobe. It would be perfect to throw on on a hot summer day, or wear to a party or other special event. The options for straps make this top so versitile, even for breastfeeding moms!

The attention to detail stands out in this pattern. Helen’s instructions are clear, and the illustrations are easy on the eyes. She even includes a glossary at the end if you’re still learning sewing terms!

Helen just celebrated 10 years of Helen’s Closet! You can read more about her journey here. She is also ½ of the Love to Sew podcast, where she sits down with Blackbird Fabric‘s founder, Caroline Somos, to talk about all things sewing-related. It’s like having your two sewing besties in your ear while you sew yourself!

Helen also has other free patterns! If you’re looking to add some more staples to your summer wardrobe, Helen’s Closet also has patterns like the Ashton Top, March Top and Dress, and the newly released Lazo Jumpsuit!

  • May snapshots 📸🌸

The month of May has been a bit of a whirlwind. I’ve been making quilts, getting outside, wearing many of my memade skirts and dresses, and thanking God for an answered prayer that we didn’t even anticipate when the month started.

  • The Moonlight Dress by @sustainably.gabrielle is finally here. ✨

What a labor of love for this pattern. You can tell that Gabrielle’s attention to fit is so clear in this design. It’s so flattering on so many body types yet there’s room to move.

For my version during the pattern test, I added 2cm to the neckline for a little more coverage and spaced the buttons 4cm apart.

I love the waist tie for a cinched waist but could see myself making this dress in another version with a more relaxe...

  • There’s nothing quite like a classic star block quilt. ⭐️

I had the wonderful opportunity to test the new Louis Quilt Pattern for @summerflora.co . It’s an easy beginner pattern is perfect for those wanting to dip their feet into the world of quilting. It comes in 3 sizes and I know I’ll be making many more iterations of this pattern.

I made this entirely from scraps in my stash. The green fabric is a gingham from @linenlab.co.kr and the white is from a thrifted cotton duvet cover. I decid...
