Scrunchies are an easy sewing project that can be completed in as little as 10 minutes! They are the perfect way to use scraps or give someone some of that special fabric you want to share with others.
This tutorial offers 3 sizes so you’ll be able to completely customize them for anyone!
What materials do I need to make a scrunchie?
- hair ties (my favorite)
- fabric scissors or rotary cutter
- pinking shears
- sewing machine
- safety pin
- fabric marker
- sewing thread
- fabric
- small – 3×18″
- medium – 4×20″
- large – 4.5 x24″
What kind of fabric can I use to make scrunchies?
I like to use quilting cotton to make scrunchies since it is easy to work with. You can also use thrifted materials like cotton clothing or give life to thrifted bedsheets! You can use linen but it’s a little trickier to work with than cotton. Silk and chiffon would also work but is a little more difficult to use for beginners.
How to make a scrunchie –
1. Cut your fabric
Prewash to prevent shrinkage. Next, using scissors or a cutting mat and rotary cutter, cut your fabric to your desired size.
- small – 3×18″
- medium – 4×20″
- large – 4.5 x24″
2. Secure the fabric around the hair tie
Use a fabric pen or marker to mark 1 inch down from the short edge at both ends. Secure fabric around the hair tie, right sides together.
4. Begin sewing the scrunchie
Begin sewing with a ¼ inch seam allowance making sure to back stitch. This locks your stitches together so that they won’t come apart when you turn it right side out.
Sew the raw edges of the fabric (right sides together) making sure the fabric continues to wrap around the hair tie and that the elastic does not interfere with the needle while sewing.
3. Continue sewing
Continue sewing until 1-inch remains, ending with a back stitch
Trim excess fabric.
5. Turn the fabric right side
Attach a safety pin to one of the short ends of the fabric. Push the safety pin through the inside of the fabric tube. This might get finicky but keep pushing it through and pulling the outer fabric as you do.
Turn the fabric right side out and sew short ends (right side) together. Trim any excess thread.
6. Tuck raw edges in and sew
Tuck the raw edges in so that there are no raw edges of the fabric showing.
Topstitch the enclosed edge closed. Trim any excess thread.
